Operational leadership shaped by real nonprofit experience

OPERATIONAL PARTNERSHIP FOR NONPROFIT LEADERS

Nearly three decades of senior operational leadership inside nonprofits is the foundation of this work. Every organization is different, and the partnership reflects that.

What partnership looks like in practice

The work adapts to where your organization is and what it needs to move forward. Together we identify what fits and design solutions grounded in your context, your people, and your priorities. The partnership may focus on systems strengthening, hands-on operational leadership during transition, or advisement for senior leaders navigating complex operational decisions. The approach is the same regardless: practical, grounded in real capacity, and designed around your organization.

Who this work is designed for

I work with organizations of any size when the moment calls for senior operational thinking, from small, community-rooted nonprofits where operations lives on the ED's desk, to organizations navigating growth, a new opportunity, a leadership transition, a system that needs urgent attention, or simply wanting an experienced operational partner at the table.

Matthew Kessler-Vaughn, PRINCIPAL CONSULTANT

Matthew Kessler-Vaughn is a nonprofit operations executive with nearly three decades of experience leading organizations through growth, transition, and complexity. His work focuses on strengthening internal operations so leaders can make clear decisions, share responsibility, and sustain impact over time. His work begins at many different moments, when systems need strengthening, when organizations are growing into new complexity, or when a leader wants an experienced operational partner at the table to help figure it out.

Throughout his career, Matthew has served as the most senior operations leader for mission-driven organizations navigating strategic evolution, restructuring, and long-term capacity building. A hands-on approach shaped by direct responsibility for people, systems, and decisions defines how he shows up. Rather than offering abstract recommendations, the work centers on building clarity, strengthening accountability, and helping teams operate more reliably under real-world conditions.

Motivated by a long-standing commitment to social impact and equity, Matthew founded KJ Consulting Group to provide experienced operational leadership grounded in partnership and practicality. The firm is named in honor of his parents, Kathy and Jim, whose integrity, compassion, and dedication to community continue to guide his work.

That commitment extends beyond his professional practice. Matthew currently serves on the board of the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, an organization that brings community together through the arts. He has also served on nonprofit and university advisory boards, volunteered on political campaigns, and spent time as a homework mentor for elementary and middle school students, work that reflects a consistent thread of showing up for communities and causes he believes in.

Matthew is a long-time resident of Washington, DC, where he lives with his husband, Terrance. He values time spent with friends and family cooking, laughing, and enjoying life. He loves music, especially Aretha Franklin, and watching football and basketball, always rooting for the New York Giants and the Knicks. Those interests ground a leadership style shaped by patience, clarity, and showing up consistently, even when things are complicated.
