That might mean overseeing key operational functions, managing staff who carry operational responsibility, partnering with your executive director on decisions that require senior operational judgment, or stabilizing systems during a period of growth or transition. The work is defined clearly at the start so expectations are never ambiguous.

An undefined engagement where scope and expectations are left open. It also does not include work that requires specialized professionals such as legal counsel, HR investigations, or audit services. Those boundaries exist to protect you as much as they define the work.
